Communications Portfolio
| Hilary Woodley is a member of the ADSA Western Cape Branch and initially served on the Western Cape branch committee as secretary and then as CPD portfolio holder. In 2004 she was nominated for the Communications Portfolio on the executive. Her main role on the executive is to be the core point for communication going out to ADSA members. One of the focus points of this committee was to develop a marketing strategy for ADSA. They met with a business strategist regarding the marketing of ADSA and from this two key focus areas were identified, namely promoting the profession and enhancing communication. Together with a team of Dietitians they were able to develop the “If it’s about Nutrition ask your Dietitian” pamphlet launched last August. The pamphlet was designed to be used to market ADSA, as well as the profession, to the public and other health professionals by attaching a business card to the back bottom panel. It also serves to provide information to learners wanting to know more about studying dietetics. |

In September 2005 the committee finalised the “If it’s about Nutrition ask your Dietitian” banners which were used at the IUNS and SAFoST congresses held in Durban and Stellenbosch respectively. The ADSA Western Cape Branch and Western Cape Department of Health have made use of them for exhibitions. Should other branches like to use them, they are welcome to contact Hilary Woodley and it will be arranged provided enough warning is given.
A great number of dietitians requested that ADSA improve the media coverage on Dietetics however ADSA does not have the financial ability to pay for advertising (a one page advert can cost between R40 000 – R80 000). So a “If it’s about Nutrition ask your Dietitian” magazine filler was developed in October/November last year. This can be used by magazines if they have available space when they go to print. So far it has been published in the Nursing Today Journal and can be found in the March 2006 ME magazine currently on the shelf.
Projects Hilary Woodley and the core exec are currently working on include redevelopment of the ADSA website and developing ADSA’s corporate identity. The new website will be interactive and it is integrated with our database and accounting system. There are a number of new features namely:
As part of the communications portfolio Hilary also co-ordinates the inputs for the ADSA Directions page in the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition (SAJCN).
